Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 73 - No Maintaince Tuesday is Okay

Posted by ctrlaltwow on 28th July 2008

Aprillian and Ashayo discuss another week of playing World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s great MMORPG.

Episode 73 - No Maintaince Tuesday is Okay

What We’ve Been Doing: Aprillian

Aprillian Unlearned Primal Mooncloth, for 50g and learned Shadoweave for 20g and picked up 5 shadowweave recipes

Made macro/buttons to make twobox work for different character combinations

Spent Thursday morning getting pets over to the Alliance. They are selling like hotcakes. I wonder if it has anything to do with the latest info on pets in the Expansion.

Authenticator and 3 accounts are fun.

Aprillian made a Spellfire bag (28 slot enchanter) for Auntrillia and bought a 20 slot Enchanter’s Satchel, from the vendor in Thrallmar for like 12g. She equipped the spellfire bag, and put the satchel in her bank, buying a new slot for 25g. So now Auntrillia can de to her heart’s content

Saturday morning Triple boxed in Outland, completing some quests that Apriliian had and the other 2 had done, and then they did the pooh quest together and going into that mine

Aprillian dinged 63 and got to wear another piece of the Netherweave set, gloves. But then I noticed her shoulders were from 47 and so I got a new pair on ah. Saw her old gloves had 8+ stamina, so I ran Auntrillia around trying to find the enchant, until I realized it was from a knothide armor kit and Rilfire could make them.

Levelling Relaq, level 19 Warrior, in mining and bs. Easiest levelling ever I actually got from like 40 something to 178 without hitting a node, just smelting. And AI makes it a breeze because it tells me where mats are on each alt, on the account I’m on but if I link to other alts, it tells me their mats and also what’s in the vault. I had been saving so much mats, that I felt rich. I only had to go to the ah for some silver and gold ore, but not much of that. I was focused on the outlanders but I’m ambivalent.

Ashayo

Ashayo’s Heroic night - Ramparts and Botanica

RFK - Server failure FTL. Lost blue necklace from rare bat spawn.

Levelling Shaman. But just duel-boxing with Jekle for heals.

Levelling Mage. Hit 40 last night. Tearing through SM Mage quests - needed SM and Uldaman Completed all of Dustwallow Marsh / Mudsprocket (including mage quest to kill level 40 elite demon - soloed :) Intending to do every quest in STV!

Email: 1st email:

Hey guys I love the show. I just happened on it and am in the process of getting caught up on some of the podcasts. My question is do you have one or two episodes that explain how to multibox? I have two accounts and always wanted to give it a try but wasn’t quite sure where to start. What type of system req’s do you recommend? How do you control both characters using only one monitor and one keyboard/mouse? Any recommended mods and or macro? What types of classes work well together? How do you select quests on both characters?

Sorry for the assault of questions, but it sounds like you guys are the multibox masters and I want to glean anything I can. Thanks again.

2nd Email:

Hey Aprillian and Ashayo its Triaa again sorry I missed last week, got busy with raiding and such. So this week I decided to bring you two addons. The first is a modification to your cast bar, It is called quartz. The advantage to using quartz is that it takes into account latency for when you are chain-casting spells allowing for maximum DPS for casters. Here is a link to download this addon: http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info7158/. The second addon I decided to feature this week is the chat addon which Aprillian comments on two episodes ago. It is called Prat and allows you to customize your chat windows even more. It removes the scroll arrows on your chat panel and allows you to scroll through chat by simply mousing over the box and using your mouse scroll wheel. Here is the link: http://wowui.worldofwar.net/?p=mod&m=4413. hope ya guys enjoy these addons, I’ll be sure to have another one next week.

Email- Contest!

Hey guys!

Blade here…

I stumbled across your podcast after doing a “warcraft” search in the iTunes store… and find CAW to be a refreshing change. You actually sound like you enjoy the game, but don’t come across as exceptionally techno-obsessed (the extra sound effects some podcasts have can get rather annoying and distracting) … nor do you come across as ‘leet experts in all things WoW’… you sound like your enjoyment of the game stems not from T4/5 or Arena Season 4 and end-game content, but rather from the experience of ‘getting there’- and growing as individuals along the way. In truth, I came to be searching the iTunes store after being led there by a website dedicated to tanking, as one of my alts (my warrior) has recently respecc’d protection … and it was one of the few sites I could find that helped tanks not specifically obsessed with ‘bleeding-edge’ content and gear… for THAT reason, I put credence into what they had to say… … which leads me to my alts, your contest and my ‘unique and crazy’ situation. Like most players in WoW, I have alts. I consider not one, but two characters my ‘mains’ (allow me to explain). Bladetusk, 70 Orc Rogue, could be considered my ‘main main’ as ‘Blade’ is the moniker that I am known by within my guild; my ‘main alt’ would then be the aforementioned respecc’d 70 protection warrior, Bladeskull. Rounding the list, is my 70 Mage (Greymalkyn), 65 Hunter (Wolftusk) and numerous baby alts including a baby shaman and baby druid who are acting as my bank and AH alts respectively… and there is one other who I will mention in a moment. Now… I don’t have many alts (not even as many as Ashayo, admittedly) but I *have* been playing them for a while… and because I do not at present dual-box, I leveled each of them one by one to the levels they sit at now. For reference, ZG, AQ20, AQ40 and Naxxramas were but a twinkle in the developers’ collective eyes when I started playing and even MC, BWL and Onyxia were ‘fresh’ enough content… I recently (masochistically?) did a ‘/played’ on Bladetusk… and the number (approximately 37 or 38 days if memory serves correctly) doesn’t seem like a lot… but if you figure one or two hours per night… 365 ‘nights’ per year and 24 hours in a given day, then ol’ Blade’s been around quite a long time…

During all of this time, I have had plenty of opportunity to test and play just about every conceivable race/class/talent combination I can think of… and plenty of opportunity to realize what I prefer as a player (For the Horde!)… which leads me finally to my last alt and my own personal craziness.

Both my rogue and my hunter are my gatherers, and between them they gather every conceivable farmable mat… cloth, ores, fish, herbs, skins and motes from the clouds in Outland. I particularly enjoy the hunter as it is an ‘easy’ class to play… often times, while I am farming (he’s parked in either zangarmarsh or terokkar forest at any given time and I farm the bog lords and trees for herbs… breaking up the monotony of the grind to grab skinnable beasts or spiders for their netherweb silk. Don’t get me wrong… to play a hunter ‘well’ requires a certain amount of skill (the same can be said for any class) but I find I can turn off my brain when I play him… a nice relaxing time free from threat of dying… with his tanking pet, I only get concerned and use a heal pot when he’s got more than 2 or 3 mobs on him at the same time… otherwise, it’s a relatively effortless grind on my part. I COULD make a great deal of effort (and some day still may) and learn the class exceptionally well and become an ‘exceptional’ hunter… but at this point in time, I prefer to save my focus for the rogue and the warrior… And my other hunter. Tahrzaan. I decided I wanted to test my skill as a player and stretch my knowledge of the hunter class ‘tricks’ at my disposal… but not in the traditional way. So I rolled a Blood Elf Hunter… called him ‘Tahrzaan’ and stripped him naked. No clothes. Not even a weapon more powerful than the weenie starting dagger (the 0.9 dps one). Interesting? Crazy? Your first thought might be ‘So what? With a pet tanking and the hunter at range, there’s little danger of dying ANYway… so what’s the big deal?’ Wait for it… His ranged weapon is a throwing knife. Yeah. A hunter with no ranged skills to rely upon… (dagger crit for 25 damage ftw!) and when he leveled to 20, I got a huge boost in his melee dps with the addition of his skinning knife as an off-hand… And that’s how he’s stayed up to the present day and level 31 (and counting). Right now, he’s been doing the tauren kindergarden quests to gain enough rep for his kodo mount (as Horde can’t ride elephants… kodo’s are the closest thing), tamed him a cat from the Blood Elf newbie area (named Numa) and ran him all the way to Darkshore and managed to tame one of the spectral cats from the cat figurine idols (the ones near the nagas). That one’s named ‘Sabor’. (All names derived from the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs). I log into this toon when I tire of the hum-drum of leveling/grinding or doing daily quests or farming on my litany of alts… and I must say that it is an eye-opening experience. Mana is all-important… traps become almost a necessity, and aoe attacks are far more dangerous now than they would be normally… heck… more than one attacking mob can NOW mean death if I’m not careful.

I have been called a ‘noob’, been told to ‘put on clothes’, and ‘lrn2play’ more times than I can count… but some people are nicer about their curiosity… they simply wonder ‘why’. So I tell them. Anyone can play a hunter. It takes skill to play a hunter well. *I* plan to play this hunter well WITH his handicap - both to challenge myself and to prove that it can be done.

So in closing - as this has become much longer than I anticipated - it’d be great if I were selected in your ‘wierd and crazy’ alt contest… but even if it is not, it would be great to be mentioned in your email segment so that your listeners might be encouraged to think a little more ‘outside the box’. Examples: - Gutrot the lv70 naked troll - a pacifist priest that refuses to kill for xp - survival hunters (like mine, but with armor and decent weapons) - a warlock with no pet - adventuring in the beginning (pre-BC) zones but staying on only ONE continent

Cheers for an awesome podcast guys!

Aprillian and Ashayo discuss another week of playing World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s great MMORPG. Full Show Notes at http://ctrlaltwow.com What We’ve Been Doing: Aprillian Shadowmoon Valley - fp Altar of Shatar is Aldor friendly. Sanctum of the Stars Scryer, woohoo. Aprillian is Scryer, I thought becasue they attacked Auntrillia, that they were alliiance. There’s a tailor at the Sanctum that slells Pattern Imbued Netherweave Robe, which Aprillian didn’t know and almost bought off the aha Thursday morning got obsessed with levelling Auntrillia in enchanting and getting Treshel to the alchemy lab at work I took Aprillian back to the voidwalkers. Good xp, safe, for the most part. Rode out to Winterspring on Auntrillia and picked up 34 felcloth and almost a 100 groms Ashayo Got my authenticator (Thanks Aprillian!) Only protects game and account management website - not, for example, armory login or forums. No confirmation of serial number! Prompts you for code even if you get the password wrong - so it’s sending the account name first. Good and bad side to that. 2.4.3 patch - First chicken mount! Yay! Cool new animation for Warlock soul well. Cro Threadstrong’s yelling at the Fruit vendor is now a pale yellow, not red. Glaciuss (frost mage) is levelling much faster with Asheal tagging along. Hit 35 and stopped to level Enchanting. Vision Dust is hard to find! Ended up buying lots of silk to make cloaks to disenchant. Once past that hurdle, easily attained the goal of 275, and promptly disenchanted a whole swag of level 68 gear. Asheal did a *good* PUG! Botanica, and got a nice set of leggings for an upgrade. AIE Raid on Gruul’s Lair on Jekle. High King Maulgar down! Gruul still picking us out from between his toes. Asheal and Ashield complete all the Shadowmoon Valley group quests with the assistance of helpful guildies. Woot! Gorefiends Armor - don’t use the life steal too soon! New Video Card - Replaced ATI Radeon x1950 with Radeon HD 4870 with 512MB RAM. Yay, no more video tearing! Starting writing my first mod, based on ACE2. Looking to manage moderators in a custom chat channel. Comments:

Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 71 - Authenticator FTW

Posted by ctrlaltwow on 15th July 2008

Aprillian and Ashayo discuss another week of playing World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s great MMORPG. Full Show Notes at http://ctrlaltwow.com

Episode 71 - Authenticator FTW

What We’ve Been Doing

Aprillian

Triple Boxing in Outland - Farming Voidwalkers on Aprillian

Making loads of money on Horde Pets with my Ally Bank Alt

Sold another Primal mooncloth bag/need to make Shadow cloth Need to get to netherstorm

Did Broken Alliance for Iwari, level 47 Warlock, want to get her to 50, she’s my engineer. Brought in Rilfire, level 61 Hunter/Skinner, and it was a piece of cake.

Friday, got the Blizzard Authenticator, easy to use. Started a 4th account I can summon! Started a couple of level 1’s but I want to level them.

Bought Primal life on ah, noticed motes of life cheap on ah

Spent Saturday at work farming netherweave cloth in HFP with Aprillian. then at home had Rilfire and Aprillian doing the Stonebreaker quests. Rilfire is now behind Aprillian.

Can’t get the hang of twobox

Took Aprillian back to tb to do marrowgrain and runecloth, still halfway to exalted

Sunday, did Shambling

Monday, back in Hellfire with Aprillian, Rilfire and Auntrillian fire bombing quest, failed miserable because of the time restriction

Monday night spent tons

Ashayo

Asheal and Ashield have been making their way through all the Shadowmoon Valley quests. Completed all but two

Gorefiend’s Armor, which requires a group that is on the same quest (as it comes with an item that is required to see the mob - Vhel’kur).

Final step of “The Cipher of Damnation”

Spent 1.5hrs in Coilskar Cistern for one quest item for “The Cipher of Damnation”. The quest requires an item from a chest that is a low drop rate. Worse, the chests are locked and requires a key which is also a random drop. And the key is one-use only.

Has been great for Scryer Rep. 3000 into Honoured, and haven’t done any signet or arcane tome hand-ins.

Managed to solo “The Path of Conquest” group chain. The last part involved a timed quest to kill elite giants.

Ashayo did some more Arena PvP. Actually have enough points to buy a couple of items. Actually only won a couple of “real” fights. Came up against a 5-box shaman team (ouch), and a team called “loseforpoints” that just quit as soon as battle started.

Ashield got a world drop for [Ragesteel Shoulders] which was enough to prompt mass farming of ore to get Blacksmithing up to 375

Asheal had enough shadow cloth to make all of the Frozen Shadoweave set - more farming this time for primals, and levelled Tailoring to 375

Levelling one mage with Asheal. Much more fun!

When ungrouped, get majority of XP on the mage even if priest helps by healing.

Levelling Shaman - still getting scaled XP depending on amount of damage done when ungrouped.

Emails:

1st Email:

Hey again Aprillian and Ashayo, Its Triaa again with a very long email. Well after the emails following mine suggested a majority of the addons I had planned to talk about I had to go digging through my 300+ addons, yes I spend way to much time looking on addon sites, to find one that I thought would be a great addition to any character. The Addon I decided on is Bongos 3 and Xperl Unit Frames. Bongos is an addon which removes the blizzard action bars and allows you to place action bars in any size or area of your screen which you desire, as well as simply then mousing over the bar and pressing the key(s) you would like to bind that action bar slot to if you use the keyboard to play. Although it may take two hours to configure, which seams like a long time the fact that you will more than likely enjoy the look of it so much that you never touch it again.(unless you are me, I am never satisfied with my UI and need to constantly change things) And Ashayo it too allows you to move and change the minimap :) . Along with bongos I use a unit frames addon called Xperl Unit Frames. This addon takes the normal bars showing your health and mana and puts them in a sleeker, movable square format which makes your view a lot less crowded, the best part is, it allows you to have a moving 3D image of your character instead of a picture. Both of these addons are full of options that you can change. I will link to some of the pictures of my UI so that you can see examples. These can both be found on wowui.worldofwar.net the website I recommend for addons when getting it straight from the addon author is not possible.

bongos-http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info8419-Bongos3.html

xperl- http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info5248-X-PerlUnitFrames.html

To answer the question of why I do not prefer curse.com is because after being hacked a few months back, I take extreme precautions in everything I do. After scanning many of the addons downloaded off of curse.com I found them to contain key loggers and viruses.

And lastly here is my story about what I have done with my alts for the contest. A few weeks ago in a Karazhan raid I spent time switching between Triaa and Thayloo. Not only did I run both characters to the instance, I switched characters after almost every boss because of what each character needed off of the bosses. And a little side note, running into Orgrimar and sheeping people is quite a fen experience.

And here are the screenshot links:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn274/wowwarlock2/WoWScrnShot_050908_100926.jpg - UI showing bongos and Xperl

I couldn’t leave out a pic on my Drake after seeing the shining moment of me hitting exalted now could I?

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn274/wowwarlock2/WoWScrnShot_050908_155045.jpg - Me on my Drake :)

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn274/wowwarlock2/WoWScrnShot_070208_215442.jpg - Lastly my current UI

As you can see bongos and xperl allow for many options the default blizzard UI doesn’t.

2nd Email:

Hello again

One of my must have mods aside form the core mods of Gather, Cartographer, Auctioneer is a mod called PricePer.

When looking over auctions in the AH and you see for example a stack of 12 something going for 10 gold, PricePer breaks down the price per each unit in the stack so you know what is the cheapest stack if you looking to buy and what your competition is if you are trying to sell without having to breakout the calculator.

A word of caution on the mod that sells all your gray items at once. Every once in a while I will find a gray item that is in demand in the auction house. So if you mindlessly get use to vendering all grey items, you may miss an opportunity to make a nice profit.

Patrick

Contest:

Ctrl Alt WoW Cast!

Thank you very much for answering my question on the most recent podcast! It’s was great to have that answer there.

I have managed to figure everything out recently and have my personal account settled and ready to go, so the bright side is that I have my toons back. I have started an alt and kept dual boxing in the back of my mind, but I have decided to just single play my alt with a few friends instead.

I just wanted to submit my story for the WoW authenticator as well in this email. From what I understood you guys are asking for the craziest thing you have ever done an alt.

well I actually have two, but one is more background and one is more the story.

My alt situation in WoW has always been this. I am never able to actually keep an alt as just that. As I make an alt, I make it my main for the time being. Why? Because if I don’t do this, In my head, I won’t play him as much as I would like to. And since I love exploring classes, I would just make it my main for the time being.

As you can guess, this makes my friends on different servers very frustrated, as every time I would make an alt, I would tell them to send me tells there, and I could change toons anywhere from once a month to once a week! I would hit the toon very hard and be an avid player of that class, and then I would eventually burn out on it and roll something else or roll back onto my other toon!.

Well it eventually got to the point that I would just delete my “old main” (never level 70 at the time, but he would be somewhere in his 30’s and I would remove it so that I could focus on this new “main”). As you can see, this creates a problem with progression, I would NEVER get past level 30.

So basically, I have had an alt that has reached level 30 of every class, every horde race and 2 of the alliance races. This basically creates a sort a boredom of the beginning zones, so for me, any alts I start (currently working on a rogue), I basically go crazy doing the first few lands zones because I have done them soo many times!

Now onto the “craziest” story - a few months back I decided to roll a hunter (again to replace my main, but at this point I had a 70 main!). Of course, it never actually replaced my main and remained to be an alt, however, I did manage to be completely into this character and was very serious as far as getting him a pet I loved and good professions and the like.

Now once he hit level 20, I decided to myself I wanted to find the most unique pet for that level to level up with me. This pet was going to be my level 70 pet, he was going to follow me all the way through. I knew I would grab a ravage if I made it to outlands but I would continue to have this pet with me for a long time.

I decided that I would get the ghost saber pet. This pet is available in Darkshore. So I took my female orc hunter, flew her to Barrens, walked myself up to ashenvale, grabbed both horde flightpaths, at which point I crossed the border into Darkshore, walked straight from very south darkshore all the way to the very top of darkshore where this cat could be found. However, if you have ever attempted to get this cat, you’ll know that it isn’t just a mob that is walking around. In order for this to work, you have to go into this land with a bunch of rubble spread over quite a big mass of land.

I didn’t know much about the quest when I started it, so I dismissed my pet before I took off to get this kitty…. big mistake. In this land full of rubble, there are many, many naga’s, all around level 20, that you have to pass in order to find a tiny cat figurine on the floor. Only one figurine spawns in this entire area at a time! once you find the figurine, you have to click it, loot it, and hope that a ghost sabre spawns. If it doesn’t, you get a cat figurine loot piece, and then you are off to hunt the next figurine. I spent over 2 hours in one sitting trying to get this cat to spawn to no avail, all while sniping down naga’s. I was forced to grind level 21 completely in this time due to the amount of nagas.

The next day, I went ahead and decided to give this hunting another stab. For those of you who play hunters, I was using the Hawk Eye spell repeatedly. I was using it to find certain high points to pan my camera around in search for this cat. After another hour of farming for this cat, I was unable to get the cat to spawn, and returned to my main for the time being. The next day, after about half an hour, I noticed that the servers were going down for rolling restarts! In desperation, I frantically searched for more figurines before the server went down. About 5 minutes before the server went down, I spotted one! I scrambled to get to the figurine, killing any naga’s as fast as possible, finally reached it! I opened it up and hoped for a cat and there it was! I tamed it and 5 seconds later, the server disconnected me for restart… I waited for the restart, relogged in, and there was my beautiful ghost saber! The only cat that is translucent before you learn the spell prowl.

What really made me mad was when I logged in. Once I knew I had my cat, I noticed that there was a figurine right in front of me. I clicked it just for the fun of it, and another cat spawn! I was soo mad! IT took me over 50 figurines to get this cat to spawn, and then once I have him he spawns agaiin! Rediculous in my opinion! But that’s my luck!

Anyways, that’s my story, thanks very much for the answer again!

Oh and since I forgot to put a name last time (this is under my initials, I always forget), go ahead and call me Komish ( koh - mish)

Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 70 - CAW dings 70 before Aprillian

Posted by ctrlaltwow on 6th July 2008

Aprillian and Ashayo discuss another week of playing World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s great MMORPG. Full Show Notes at http://ctrlaltwow.com

Photobucket

What We’ve Been Doing

Aprillian:

Aprillian got the brazier and loves it. Still needs to get SW flame. Got obsessed with getting shoulders for level 2, well now 3 alt.

Ashayo:

Ashayo - Raid night: Gruul’s Lair, Magtheridon, Karazahn all in one night

Asheal and Ashield started the quest lines in Shadow Moon Valley.

Mod for dual boxing: twoboxtoolkit http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info7199-TwoBoxToolkit.html

2nd Toon: /tb master <1st> /tb sticky

1st Toon: /target <2nd> /followme

- Automatically accepts party invite - Automatically accepts quests (so just share from master) - Follow warning - Relay chat messages - and more!

Greatly reduces the need to switch to the 2nd toon’s window! The sticky follow ( automatically re-follows at end of combat ) is FANTASTIC!

Levelled Mages’ Enchanting to 225 in order to DE a bunch of gear laying around.

Mages hit 30. Woot! Wait for patch now?

Started a Shaman and followed around with Ashayo (ungrouped) Level 1 : 50 exp per kill if Shaman does the damage ; 15 exp if Ashayo assists Level 10: 100 exp per kill if Shaman does the damage ; 50 exp if Ashayo assists Experience varies depending on how much damage Ashayo does.

Emails:

Hey Aprillian and Ashayo its Triaa again finally, I am back from being out of town for a month and I’ve just recently caught up on all of the episodes and noticed your asking for examples of some useful addons. Aside from mages addons are my specialty so today I thought I would share some of my favorites with you over the next few episodes. The addon I have for today is a mage addon called sheep watch. To put it simply, this addon places a movable bar on your screen that appears when you sheep a target, and simply tells you how much time is remaining on your sheep. Sheep watch is great for raiding, instances, or everyday soloing. Being able to see how long is left on your polymorph is great for timing spells and resheeping. The only disadvantage to this addon is that you have to download it off of curse.com, because it is the only site that has an update version.

On another note I want to thank Ashayo for convincing me to start both a paladin and a shadow priest. I don’t have two accounts so I can’t see the duel boxing potential of this combination. My pally is 35 and my shadow priest is 28 I am enjoying leveling them both especially since the priest is the one class I had not played past 12 before this. Congrats on Episode 70 and I agree it is funny that the show is dinging before you. Keep up the good work, I hope to see another 70 episodes come from you guys.

If anyone has any questions you can email me at wowwarlock2@gmail.com.

Thayloo/Triaa lvl 70 Mage and Warlock

Email #2 After a long stream of bad luck in my World of Warcraft, I have found myself without an account to play on, with none of my 70 toons, and in a struggle to figure out what to do next. The story is to long to go into, but it really put me in a bad position.

I have decided to just give it another crack and start my grind to level 70 again, this time dual boxing. A friend of mine is giving me their second account that they have just sitting idle so that I have an account to call my own, and I am using my brother’s for the Dual box toon.

I’m having trouble picking professions, however. I was hoping you could help me.

I am dual boxing two warlocks, and am planning on leveling up to pvp (not raid, though I may raid here and there, but PvP is the focus). It isn’t for sure, but it is possible that my brother may quit playing by the time I round 70, so I may end up with one warlock only.

That being said, I’m going to still dual box my way up, and am wondering which profesions should I put on the second lock on teh account that may end up getting dropped. I want to be a miner Jewelcrafter on my main warlock. But I can’t seem to pick something on the second. Skinning would be easy, so that is a choice, the other options I was considering was herb/alch but I don’t think that would work wel since my method of Dual Boxing will not have me watching my second window of WoW so I won’t be able to have track herbs up. I eliminated Tailoring because I didn’t seem to justify leveling it for the 70 gear. Any suggestions?

Thanks guys and great podcast!

Comments:

Some other mods that you may have not discussed: gatherer - keeps track of everything you find on any alt so you don’t have to flip back and forth between mining and herbalism autoprofitX - sell all grey items with one click. You won’t believe how much nicer this is than the default way RecipeRadar - shows you where you can buy recipes on your minimap RecipeBook - keeps track of all your known recipes on all alts. When you come across a new recipe in the world, it tells you which alt knows it and which alt will be able to use it if they don’t know it but have the skill Postal/Postman/HandyNotes_Mailboxes - bunch of mailmods. Not sure which allows me to open all emails with one click so I’m using them all. Great time saver if you’re doing a lot of AH

Hey guys Auho (Ah hoe) here.

First I would like to say I love the show. I wrote in today to tell you about a mod that i use that helps me keep track of my talent specs on all my different alts. The mod is called talented, ( http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/9159/ ) with it you can save talent specs so you have a template to follow when you are leveling up. You can either put the talent spec in manually or you can import a spec from blizzards talent calculator. Doing this has helped me keep all my alts straight in my mind. Also I was just wondering how many level 70’s does Ashayo have? Keep up the great work and thank you for the podcast.

Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 69 - Summer Fire Festival Continues

Posted by ctrlaltwow on 30th June 2008

What We’ve Been Doing?

Aprillian

Obsessed with getting 350 blossoms so I can get the fire pet on Aprillian which is crazy cause she just purchased a Mana Wyrmling for 38g

Actually got to Exador and Darnassus, died a lot but got the flames. Had a hard time juggling alts. Sometimes the mood would hit to run low levels and then sometimes I wanted upper.

Got to Exador with Aprilian, Treshel and Auntrillian and couldn’t get far. Called for reinforcement on gchat, got in after much dying.

Friday, took Ardrion

Saturday Craziest Escort Quest ever - Running my level 7 to Ironforge. Ran in with Treshel, Aprillian, Auntrillia and died. Resurrected in the tram and hung

Sun am Aprillian got dancer,

Ashayo

Tip of the Week: Bag Upgrades. Did you know that you can drag and drop a new bag into the bag slots on your GUI and it will automatically replace the existing bag, even if it is full?

Jekle and Hiide ran around to get their 350 Blossoms and do some Alliance raiding. Hiide got the Captured Flame, but it just looks like an embarrassed dead Night Elf is following him around. Got into IF, but there was a bunch of alliance around the fire. Hiide ran out in front of them and did a virtual na-dah-na-dah and ran off. Predictably, they all followed, while Jekle calmly put out the fire. :)

Ashayo partook in killing Ahune in Slave Pens, but didn’t get any of the phat loot.

Jekle ventured into Zul’Aman for the first time. Ran out of mana, but we got the bear boss down. Which meant we could help a bunch of guildies get their 20 slot bag.

The level 25 Mid Summer Fire Trek. Why? Well, I wanted to see if I could get all the flight paths where all the Fires are. Plus, getting 350 blossoms for Brazier of Dancing Flames But most important: Getting quest experience does *not* eat into your rested EXP. So if you can do a quest without actually killing anything, you just keep accumulating rest. By the end of this silliness, my mage hit level 29 ( Four full levels just by doing these quests ), and the rested bar is still not visible.

None of this was corpse jumping. Sure, I died a few times, but I was rezed on the spot and kept running.

Ran from sepulcher to Tarren Mill To Hammerfall and Refuge point Down into Wetland, Menethil harbor Back up into Loch Modan Up to Dun Morogh, Kharanos Failed IF miserably Back to Loch Modan and down into Badlands, reached flight path at Kargath! Flew down to Booty Bay; two fires on the beach Fly up to Grom’gol Ran up STV into Darkshire, and across to Westfall Up to Goldshire Across to Lakeshire Up into Burning Steppes x 2! Back down to Swamp of Sorrows Into Blasted Lands Port to Undercity, fly to Tarren Mill Run through Hinterlands (argg) Port to Org

Flight to Ashenvale Run up through Felwood, get flight points Run through Timbermaw cave into Winterspring Fly to Sunrock retreat. Run down through Desolace x 2 Into Feralas, out to Sardor Isle, Back to camp mojache run down to freewind post in thousand needles

Summoned to exodar - ding 28!

Fly back to Freewind post Run down to Tanaris x 2 Run into Un’goro - slow fall FTW! Across to Silithus x 2 Fly to Camp T Run into Dustwallow marsh x 2

352 Blossoms!

Despite having enough for the reward, I ventured into the Outlands:

Ran down into Terrokar Forest and got them at Stonebreaker Hold and Allerian Stronghold. Fly back to Shatt Run up to Zangermarsh and get Swamprat Post FP. Run into Hellfire Peninsula. At this point I did die and corpse jump to Falcon Watch. Flew to Thrallmar and got the two fires. Fly back to Swamprat Post and run to Telredor and Zabra’jin Run down into Nagrand and got the fires at Garadar and Telaar Decided against trying to get into SMV, BE or Netherstorm

hey guys, Playing WoW for about a year now and being a Ctrl Alt WoW listener for almost the same time I finally got around to write an email to one of my favourite WoW podcasts. I think my altaholism started when I was playing around on my first character, a warrior (I know, very educated choice as a first char :P ) and saw a dwarf hunter in Westfall oneshotting everything. I immediately logged out and created a dwarf hunter myself… it went from there… everytime I saw someone else playing a certain class I just had to create a new alt… Today my characters are: a 70 hunter; a 67 paladin; a 56 warrior; a 54 mage; three lvl19 twinks and I’ve just started a shaman and a rogue. (Although most of my alts are female & Alliance, I’m not a 13 year old weirdo, Apprillian! :P )

As you can see, I’m a bit of an altaholic myself ;) I’ve been trying to get into endgame stuff though (/raiding) for some time now but somehow I always manage to get distracted with leveling alts or pvping on my twinks, etc. I hope to see some endgame content though in the near future with my current main, a holy paladin before Wrath comes out.

Ctrl Alt WoW is definitely one of my favourite WoW podcasts since you guys actually talk about “playing the game” and your experiences in-game while most podcasts just discuss news concerning WoW. Plus, you’re both altaholics like me. Most of the people I play with just have one char and maybe one alt they don’t even play. If I pay 10-15 bugs a month for playing this game, I’m not just gonna try out one class. I’ve tried out both factions and a lot of different race / class combinations so far. Even if you just level a character to lvl20-25. You get to experience new content or the same content in a different way by playing another class. Plus, it’s a good way to become a better teamplayer in my opinion to check out all the classes to a certain extend. Anyways, this is already a wall of text so I’m gonna stop rambling. Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy the podcast. Keep up the good work :-)

Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 68 - FIRE IN THE HOLE

Posted by ctrlaltwow on 22nd June 2008

Aprillian and Ashayo discuss another week of playing World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s great MMORPG. Summer Fire Festival and an interview with the host of Despair and Videogames. Full Show Notes at http://ctrlaltwow.com

Summer Fire Festival = EXP a lot

Torch tossing

What We’ve Been doing:

Aprillian

Getting ready for a Zombie Running of the Beef. I had 3 Brewfest dresses in my Guild bank. I pulled one out of one tab to put with the other and the dress became soulbound. So a warning to others, don’t pull your Brewfest dress out of Guild bank. I guess this is only going to apply to a few. So now if I want to give/sell this dress to someone, I have to make them a guild member and let them take it and then gkick them.

Lost two dog whistles on Neutral AH. Tracked the guy down in Tanaris and gave him a piece of my mind. A little while later Rilfire is back in Azhara hunting dragonkin when she notices there aren’t many around. She runs into the same guy from the AH.

Sells Azure Whelpling for 750g, nice little chunk of change to have.

Treshel made and Treshel Discovers Flask of Mighty Restoration

Spent time in Ferelas on Aprillian to get TB rep

Triple Boxed Instances three times this week - First BRS got to the boss ogre, with Riversky and then again with Goldfen

Friday Morning got on and Ashayo was on and we decided to do the Dreadsteed quest. I dual boxed with Aprillian and Auntrillia and Matadoria the priest and Asheal and Ashield for Scholomance for the imp quest. But halfway through I realized I needed some stuff.

PTR changes:

Mounts at 30?! Yes, it’s true: Apprentice Riding and mounts are now available at level 30. Training costs 35 gold.

Midsummer Fire Festival - Frustrating Torch tossing and Torch catching, but 2000exp each. - Daily More Torch Tossing and Catching, 2000 exp each (Well, 2000 exp for level 25 mage, 2100 for level 26 mage… weird)

- 1000 exp for each flame visited - Quest line in Zoram Strand. 2000 exp, 2000 exp, then can’t get the next in chain (which is just to go to Org!)

- Torch Catching - Aspect of the Pack FTW!

- RAID!

Emails:

It is pronounced RE-Agent….cause it is a reagent. If it was pronounced RE-gent….it would be spelled regent. Reagent and regent are two different words.

And no….you can not create portal to shat as mage until u are 60.

As far as asking about mods goes….I have something you could discuss. I would like to know what mods that you have found successful in indicating to you when cooldowns expire. I play a 64 paladin tank and 70 holy priest. I use ct_buff and SCT, but find them both lacking. My pally tank needs to know when her Judgement is ready, and SCT flashes it by so quickly, I usually miss it cause Im busy. And I really don’t like squinting at ct_buff to look how much longer I have on my Seals. The same can be said for my Priest and the cd’s for his healing.

What I’m looking for, is a mod that will flash in big bold letters (that I can adjust), that the cooldown has expired. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ron

Hi again,

I meant to ask Ashayo something about your AIE guild. I have several high level toons and would like to do end game raiding but have a hard time because I work Monday – Friday midnight shift at hospital, and do most of my gaming after work between 9am and 4 pm EST. As I’m sure you know Ashayo, these are not prime raiding times. I was wondering with u being in Australia (I’m not sure what the time difference is) I’m sure that you find yourself playing occasionally in the morning hours eastern standard time.

My question is, do you think I would be able to find a small raiding group within your guild that would like to have scheduled raids in morning hours mon-Friday?

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance again,

Ron

Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 67 - Oops I Knew I Forgot Something

Posted by ctrlaltwow on 16th June 2008

Addons - Quest helper and Quest guru

What We’ve been Doing

Aprillian: Aprillian went back to outland and dinged 60. Spent gold on new skills, including 510 on riding. and then selected PM and went to Cenarion Refuge to do the quest. I took Rilfire and Auntrillia as an escort but she did fine on her new mount. Couldn’t see the map on Aprillian or Rilfire but could on Auntrillia, so it was good that she was there. Then they rode to Swamprat Post to get the FP Aprillian turned in the quest and became a Mooncloth Tailor Bought the Weather beaten journal, Primal was in Og and she picked it up - I had moved Primal to Og so she could get some snakes to transfer over. Gold spammers in og are awful Spent Tues and Wed with Rilfire fishing Wed night went to Cenarion and bought book but not high enough. Fished in outland Auntrillia took Relaq and iShaq into SFK - rotating pri and Auntrillia for summoning Grinding Azure Whelplings in Azhara, I got one Rezzing at the Spirit Mounting my kodo in a tight spot in Azhara Spent almost an hour Friday morning transferring dragon hatchlings to the ally ah Friday Night, Sat morning and evening, killing blue dragons in Azhara while Aprillian started her Dreadsteed quest. Sunday Morning Rilfire dings 61 killing dragons in Azhara Aprillian had to hearth out of Shadow Hold to get 150g and go back to Burning Steppes to get some more potion to pretend to be Jaedenar Ashayo: First week where we got down Hydros and Lurker down in one night. Won some very nice [Boots of the Shifting Nightmare] to top the night off. Completed the Blessings deck and headed on over to Goldshire to get “Darkmoon Card: Crusade” from the Darkmoon Faire. “Each time you land a harmful spell on an opponent, you gain 8 spell damage for the next 10 sec., stacking up to 10 times.” And to complete the hat-trick, bought [Fused Nethergon Band] using badges with the Shattered Sun offensive. Asheal and Ashield have been continuing their quest lines in Netherstorm and making steady progress. Two “Quests of the week” this week 1. “Bloody Imp-ossible!” - You get this from Cosmowrench and get given an item that lets you summon an imp. So I’m not completing that quest, and will just keep the item. Unfortunately, only works in Netherstorm 2. “Destroy Naberius!”. This quest line starts in Kirin’Var Village in south east Netherstorm with the quest “Malevolent Remnants”. A couple of the steps have fairly low drop rates, but persist, because the final quest reward is well worth it. Naberius herself can be tough, but I managed it with the priest/pally combo. Important that you watch the ground and move, because she casts a spell on the ground that ticks for 1000 damage. First stab at dual-boxing Karazhan this week with Ashayo and Asheal. Got up to Curator. The mages got some loving this week, and they both up to 25 now. Each of them got a run though SFK and BFD with Ashayo and Hiide, so starting to get geared up. Using Keyclone is starting to get a little more familiar, and actually survived some hairy encounters in Ashenvale while doing the Warsong Saw Blades quest. Can’t really decide where to quest them from 25-30. Suggestions?

Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 66 - Double Ding

Posted by ctrlaltwow on 8th June 2008

Aprillian and Ashayo discuss another week of playing World of Warcraft, Blizzard’s great MMORPG. Arkinventory What We Did this Week

Aprillian

BRD Ashayo showed me the correct way to get there

Triple boxed on day with Goldfen and the following day with RustRuby - Loving the mages Found out I sold a moth to Sunwheat

Levelling Auntrillia in Enchanting

Every morning just about, went into BRD. Had fun.

Sat morning Got a pst from a guildie about a request for a necklace from Treshecc

Ashayo

While killing Fel Corruptors in Blades Edge, the item “Damaged Mask” dropped. This starts a quest line that is mostly soloable, but much easier with two character. http://thottbot.com/q10810

You get sent to Camp Forge Anger to use the mask as a communicator to talk to the Burning Legion. Two things about this chain. (1) The mask quest item has a 1hr timer on it, implying the quest is a 1hr timed quest, but doesn’t display as such. (2) One step in the chain has you kill Anger guards to collect 5 keys to activate obelisks to summon Doomcryer. Make sure you clear the area fairly well before you start using the keys. Otherwise, by the time you get to the 5th, the first obeslisk has powered down again, and you have to start over. Doomcryer is a elite mob, so tough to solo, but easily done with two players.

The next part of the chain sends you into Death’s Door. One step has you destroy two Warp Gates with a cannon, which is controlled like a pet. However, imps come out of the Warp Gate and explode on the cannon, causing it damage. You need to destroy the Warp Gates before the imps destroy the cannon. Again, most easily done with two players. I just had my pally lay down Consecrate - the imps have very little hit points.

The last step has you kill the Hound Master, who is a level 68 elite. But, it is easily soloable because you get given a wand that summons an Ancient to help you. The reward is a selection of 6 different neck pieces.

Add ons for alts

Arkinventory

Shows who has what.

Email:

Good afternoon

I was going to talk about my views on my alts, which I have many, I play both factions but my main is a 70 alliance warrior.

But then Aprillan, you mentioned how you enjoy skinning mobs that the alliance players downed but yet you get very irritated when you neutral auctions are intercepted (as stated in #63) ?

Are you kind of contradicting yourself ? You do not like it when someone intercepts your auctions but you enjoy swiping skins from mobs that alliance downed.

I never really knew this sneaky aspect of bottom scanner until I heard it from your podcast, several casts ago, but I tell you, I think I need to spread the word on the alliance side on Earth’en Ring on the finer points of its use.

LOL perhaps if you ask for forgiveness from some lonely alliance player I will re-consider letting the cat out of the bag on how to use bottom scanner.

For me, if I see a horde in trouble I will always help them if they acted respectful to me.

Regards

Patrick

P.S. I do have an alt in AIE………

Episode 65- Oh Wait, We Didn’t Get a Title

Posted by ctrlaltwow on 2nd June 2008

Arkinventory-Great alt addon - Basic set up, next week we’ll go over more intense.

New Format - Cycle through various subjects? New subject in closing, what we will be talking about next week.

What We’ve been doing:

Aprillian

Sunday:

Spent a ton of money levelling up tailoring on Aprillian. Triple boxed Aprillian Treshel and Auntrillia in Outland and found I really need a skinner. Rilfire, my 60 hunter is on the same account as Aprillian. I have two choices. I can transfer Rilfire or level up Ardrion, hmm.

Tuesday, I transfered Rilfire to another account. Now Aprillian can have her two hunters to back her up. The idea of leveling Ardrion 16 levels was too daunting. So now I have Rilfire, level 60 hunter skinner/lw, Aprillian 58 Warlock tailor/herbalist and Auntrillia 63 Hunter miner/enchanter. I think I have all the bases covered. I tried triple boxing in Outland thinking I would get Aprillian up to speed running her through the initial bunch of quests in Thrallmar. Unfortunately Aprilian died too many times. So we headed to Burning Steppes to practice and to be closer to Sunken Temple for Thursday night run. Aprillian needs to comeplete the Felwood Warlock quest to get the trinket to summon a warlock without a soul shard.

Thursday,

Triple boxed ST with Jekle. Brought Auntrillia, Aprillian and Rilfire got my trinket Abyss Shard http://thottbot.com/?i=52072

Friday Morning:

Made my first Primal Mooncloth bag. I had 7 Primal mooncloths, which I wait almost 4 days to make each. Primal MC takes 1 bolt of imbued netherweave 1 primal water and one primal life,Primal MC is 47g. Right now PW is 22g and PL is 17g, that’s 39g, 1 bolt of imbued netherweave is 4g 37c 1 bolt of imbued nw is 3 bolts of netherweave and 2 arcane dust, 1 stack of nw is about 2.5 to 6 g and acrane dust a little under 1g apiece. You can wait ever 4 days is pay 44g or you can buy it for 47g. ““““““““““““““` Triple boxed with a guildy named Goldfen. We tried Ramparts but died a lot So then BRD, which was fun but then we ran out of time.

Saturday, weird day. Felt restless and needed to be playing wow. Needed to be “in WoW” Ever have that feeling? I had Auntrillia and Rilfire parked at BR

Sunday - went to AV with Aprillian

Ashayo Another extended maintenance - no playing for me Tuesday night!

Tackling with the mages. Managing to improve crowd control - took down Knucklerot and Luzran (level 21 elites) Still missing something though.

Ashayo - RAID! More success in Serpent Shrine Cavern - Lurker down two weeks in a row now - still no purple warlock lovin’ though. Decided we pretty much Gruul on farm status after we one-shotted him on a mis-pull.

Jekle - First time healing Heroic Arcatraz. Tip for noobs - if summon fails, it could be because you haven’t bought the relevant heroic key off the appropriate quarter master! Great guild group - pally tank is something for Ashield to aspire to.

Jekle and Hiide snuck into a Zul’Aman to get the 20 slot Tattered Hexcloth Sack

Asheal and Ashield finished up in Nagrand. Soloed Gurok the Usurper. Tried soloing Levixus the Soul Caller, but he summons elementals as well as mind controlling my priest. Fail! Completed the Greatmother Geyah quest line for the first time. This questline starts with “A visit with the Greatmother”, but there are three other chains you need to complete to open it. 1) blademaster chain http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=10107 2) altruis the demon hunter chain http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9983 3) the murkblood quests (murkblood invaders http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=9872 as well as the escort quest out of sunspring village)

The quest line involves a trip into Auchenai Crypts to kill Exarch Maladaar. Once dead an NPC spawns near his body. (It’s one of the crystal beings like A’dal) Be sure to talk to it to get the next quest in the chain. Also, don’t forget to pickup the Soul Mirror quest item hovering near the dead boss. The last killing quest involves killing 15 elites in Nagrand. Supposed to be a 3-man group quest, but soloed it quite easily. Completing the quest line gives both a blue neck piece and another piece - I chose the plate legs. http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=10212

It’s one of the few quests where I stopped to “watch the show”. Thrall is the Greatmother’s grand son and he comes to Garadar as part of the story line. Horde players get a nice 1hr buff when this occurs.

Dinged 68 and now questing in Blades Edge Mountains.

re: Re: Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 63 - Learning Your Alts

Enjoy the podcast (I must admit I was excited to find out Ashayo was co-hosting a podcast. I was disappointed when his dual boxing tips on The Instance stopped).

I must share my opinion on something Aprillian has mentioned a few times in the last few shows. If you put something up in the auction house, someone else can NOT “steal” that item by buying it. They are buying an item that you are selling. If you are going to use the neutral auction house as your own way to make money (by sending faction pets back and forth and selling them), I don’t think you should really complain when someone else uses the neutral auction house to make some gold. The fact that the person has returned your items is kind of them, I suppose, but I don’t feel it is necessary. Also, you have been taught this lesson on more than one occasion, and have yet to learn from experience. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. If you stick your hand in a fire, you get burned. Don’t stick your hand in the fire again because you think you should be able to.

Keep up the great work on the podcast.

Email

Hello Aprillian and Ashayo! I enjoyed episode 64 and had a question for you both: When managing all of your alts, do you find that it is easier or difficult to earn gold? I find that when I’m playing alts, I often have to supplement their income with gold from my main. Do you find yourselves always going back to your main to farm or do dailies for your alts, or are your alts self-sufficient?

Thanks and keep up the great work.

–Molsan

P.S. Great job on the How I WoW podcast, Aprillian! :)
